Columbus Community United Church had its first Sacrament on the 4th Sabbath of October in 1835. Reverend Robert Thornton was the two-point charge minister at the time.
The first church building was a log structure built east of Two Rod Road (now Harmony Road) and close to Winchester Road East. In 1847, the second church was built on the north side of Columbus Road East. The third church is our present building. It was built in 1873 and Reverend Robert Thornton preached the opening ceremony.
In 1987, the decision was made to close the Raglan United Church and its members were welcomed into the Columbus congregation. Two beautiful stained glass windows commemorate this event.
In 1995, an addition was built on the east end of the church. The ground floor contains washrooms, a storage area, and a church office. The second floor is a choir/meeting room and is named the Raglan Room. A chairlift has also been installed.
In 1995, a 160 year history of our church was compiled, entitled “Columbus Through The Years: A history of Columbus Community United Church 1835-1995”. Further details and many interesting historical photographs can be found in the booklet.
In 2010, we celebrated our 175th anniversary with a year-long series of events.
