Our Mission Statement:
To plan, lead, and oversee the work of Columbus Community United Church, within the framework of the United Church of Canada as stated in the doctrine known as common faith outlined in the United Church Manual.
Our congregation reaches out to the greater Columbus community for events such as Canada Day, the Strawberry Supper, and the Giant Yard Sale. Our Mission and Service work reaches families in need of food, clothing, school supplies, and comfort, as well as contributes to the United Church of Canada Mission work. Shut-ins receive prayers, visits, and Christmas poinsettias. We share the work of “Bridge to a New Home” and support new immigrants as they find housing and support in the Durham Region. We work as a family to share God’s love for all. Doors open, always welcome!
The Church:
Our church has a beautiful sanctuary with lots of wood and historical stained glass. It will hold 200 persons and has a warm atmosphere with excellent acoustics and cushioned pews. A projector and sound system are used weekly to enhance the service. Both a grand piano and an electric organ are used for music-making.
A small “choir” room called the Raglan Room completes the upper level of our church building. This room houses the Columbus Private School on weekdays and is used by the church choir and wedding parties on weekends.
Our basement floor has a large open room used by the Columbus Private School on weekdays, and the congregation (coffee time/meetings/activities) on weekends. Two all gender washrooms, an administrator’s office, the Minister’s office, and two adjoining kitchen areas for food preparation/storage are also found in the basement level.
Our church grounds are a treed oasis, lovingly cared for by both our congregation and our neighbourhood community.
Lots of free parking is available behind the church.
A chair-lift is available for those who require it. It can be found when you enter through the back door from the parking lot.
Our Faith in Play
Our congregation meets socially in many different ways each week. Many go out for Sunday brunch at a local restaurant after Sunday service. The men meet monthly for a Saturday breakfast, often including our friends from neighbouring churches. Musicians are invited to entertain the community in our acoustically friendly sanctuary. We have had recitals and concerts of varied instruments, styles, and ages. There is always food! You are welcome to come and feast at our annual corn roast, Strawberry Supper, spaghetti dinners, and our monthly Friday Good Times Club. We go to the local theatre, carve pumpkins, build gingerbread houses, compete in baking contests, and so much more. Doors open, always welcome!
